Gandalf The Grey (Canvas, 24" x 32", by Jerry Vanderstelt) (# 10/150)

I must've glossed over this one before as it came out in 2019, but I recently "discovered" it and fell in love. It's a little different from Jerry's typical style...

I am working with Weta as a licensed artist on many projects, and during the San Diego Comic Con of 2018, Weta Workshop owner, Richard Taylor, challenged me to create a painting with a realistic approach to an unrealistic geometric form, such as the Mini Epic Gandalf sculpt.
On top of that, the challenge was to infuse the look of actor Ian McKellan as Gandalf into this art, as if the design was made of real flesh and blood. The results gave this art a very unique look to my otherwise realistic art!

Here is the Mini Epic Gandalf The Grey vinyl statue that the painting is based on

Ahh, okay, after seeing the figure I understand the painting.
I think the artist captured the face and eyes particularly well.

I always thought the LOTR mini figs were so cool. Great art.

Looks really amazing. Congratulations. Taking inspiration from a figure and turning it into art with such detail. Great.

When purchasing these works or before purchasing them, do you decide where you will hang them on your wall? Is there an order to the paintings? Or do you act according to your own ideas?

Oh yeah, whenever I see some art I want, I always have a place (or places) in mind for it. I have my eye on a few more Raymond Swanland prints and I have the configuration thought out...no predefined order, just my own ideas for displaying. Eventually I'll run out of wall space, but thus far I haven't gotten any art with the intention to just store it.

I looked into it a bit. Yes, they have different styles of work.

It's always great to come up with your own ideas. I understand the situation about your wall space very well. Unfortunately, these situations are a common problem for all of us.
