Newbie looking for advice

Alrighty so I'm treading completely new waters here because I caught eye of a statue I REALLY want and also have been watching a bit of Adam Savage's Tested stuff which has some statue-ing (What would you guys call it?). So this statue I'm looking at is a lil pricey for me ($170) and I don't want to order it and completely ruin it with my lack of painting/construction experience. The real point of this is to ask advice on paints, techniques, and perhaps where I can get some cheap models/something to practice painting on before I plunge into the big guy. I'm typing this out before I go to bed so thanks in advance! I'll try to respond tomorrow if this gets traffic.

Howdy and welcome to the forums, I would start by checking out the painters pitstop forum: http://www.statueforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=93 . Lots of awesome painters hang out their and I would check out some of the stickies. Also, yeah youtube is a great starting place. Brushes would be the affordable route and then once you mastered that you can start saving up for an airbrush. If you like some of the tested stuff this might be a site to check out https://industriamechanika.com/shop/. You can also find lots of minitures to paint online.

Welcome to the forum. You just stepped into kind of an expensive hobby with resin kits (aka garage kit). If you watch some of the Tested videos, Norm and Frank go through some of the basics of painting kits and there are also references of some smaller, less costly kits. Many are produced in small batches by independent makers. You can check out some places like Monsters In Motion who sell kits. Also ebay is a decent place for resin kits, but just avoid anything from Singapore or Thailand as they have been know for decades for casting poor quality kits with bad resin. I've built a dozen resin kits with dozens more still in boxes.

Here's the link to ebay category for Character Figures resin kits in the US
