I've yet to see anyone take responsibility for the collecting community as a whole and admit that many of us buy too much too fast. How many times have we seen pictures posted by people who have already filled up whole rooms with statues? How many times have we seen pictures posted by people who only have closet space to display statues?
At some point, these collectors were probably complaining that there wasn't enough product, and statue companies ramped up production to meet demand. Also, you can't blame statue companies for making "too much product" as long as people are buying, even if they don't have room to display new purchases anymore. Sideshow, P1, XM, etc. don't care what you do with a statue after you buy it.
Run out of space? That's the individual's problem, no one else's.

I'll admit that I bought too much and the space issue is making me slow down a lot. I think the companies are part to blame, PCS's shady moves come to mind immediately and as I mentioned releasing/rehashing past sellouts with different paint or sculpted instead(Sabretooth) cause backlash for some original owners as it affects the aftermarket too. You could argue the reason for the rising prices is partly because the companies saw the high aftermarket values of some past releases and wanted to test the waters and get their share.
Here's my main point, I'll keep it simple. The rich people became rich for a reason and buying new statues at $500-2000+ when the value plummets immediately after release isn't going to fly. These are the customers that companies rely on, they don't want people not preordering and waiting until in hand to buy aftermarket for less, but that's the smart thing to do right now. I haven't actually even sold a piece yet but I need to clear out some room eventually, I'm just making some observations from what I've seen as someone who started collecting statues around 10 years ago.

Okay, I'll be the person to say that people grossly exaggerate variants, the effect they have on original statues, and how many are made.
A gold Optimus Prime is worthless to me, why would I care about him in gold? If the original is scare and has high demand, I'll still have to pay through the nose to get him.
If your statues are crashing in value at release, that's to be expected with flippers, people with "collector's ADD" rushing out to sell pieces they just bought for the new & shiny, and people trying to free up space. The statues are not even getting a chance to appreciate in value.
Common sense will tell you nothing is going to immediately appreciate in less than a year... that's crazy. That takes time, not days, but years. I can only think of a few statues that appreciated in value extremely quick in this age of the hobby.
But if your statue tanks in value and remains like that for years, then that only shows how much demand was there to begin with.
