People love characters who go through struggles, and what more base struggle is there with the different facets of your own personality?
Banner represents the Ego...the rationalising, organising and realistic part of the whole.
Hulk represents the Id...the base, primal and instinctual part.
They each possess part of their Super Ego...which allows them to moralise and have a higher rationale.
Hulk is a great character because when you strip away the other things that makes him great: the action, cool villains, great supporting cast, etc, there is a clear and simple premise that anyone can relate with - It's a simple struggle between your desires and your rational mind.

Hulk's easy to relate to. We've all had that moment that causes the fight response to kick in, filling us with adrenaline, throwing logic out the window and wanting to break something (or someone).
And then when it's over we calm down and turn back to Bruce Banner.

LOL! Loved the responses. All I have to say though is: Hulk not sexy.
(Not big on Sex & the City either, more of a x-files, breaking bad chick)
But have a great day you all.

I agree 100%.
And I will add, men by nature are problem solvers. Don't ask us a question if you are not looking for us to give you a possible answer or an attempt at a solution.
Hulk provides male readers the release for those that ask those questions that don't want to be solved. (Aka wives, mothers, etc.) They want commiseration or nurturing most of the time and not a solution.
Hulk is the Ultimate Problem Solver and take no guff for it! He does what every man wishes he could do! Takes care of business!
And as you can see, each man posting here may have a different take on why the Hulk is great to them, but the similarity is that all guys depending on their own struggles, find solace in the Hulk. He has a common ground with all his male readers one way or another!

If you like monster trucks, topless women tattoos, and single syllable words, you'll love the Hulk.
Kidding aside, what makes the Hulk particularly interesting is how his character plays off against his opponents. He generally faces off against prejudice and intolerance, deceit, and egos the size of Jupiter. While the Hulk can never be mistaken for an Einstein, he nonetheless shows us that a good character and unwavering principles will often find a way persevere and win the day. He values peace and friendship above all else, though he fears he may never truly experience them. Sadly, his brutal and simple nature is often misundestood as uncontrollable rage and thus is often subjected to full scale onslaughts by superheroes, villains, and the military.
He also absolutely loves Hostess fruit pies.
