The Globes generally don't translate automatically to Oscars. The SAGs would be a better indication. They are more prestigious.

The Revenant was a very good movie. Well acted and directed. However, it doesn't feel like a lock to me nor do I view it as highly as others. The story is pretty straight forward. The directing is amazing in spots, however, that same creativity with a camera can take you out of the movie when you stop and marvel at the director's craftsmanship. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic movie. But I'd probably put The Martian over it. And I'm really interested in checking out the other Best Picture nominees.

Crazy that Scott has again been overlooked for best Director yet his movie has been nominated.

Lenny Abrahamson's direction of Room was far more moving in it's story and emotional depth, so I'm guessing this surprise pick is what got Scott bumped out.

Plan on seeing The Room over the weekend. The director is Irish so I'll support his movies, all of which I have enjoyed especially The Garage.

Martian over Revenant? Interesting choice.
Granted they both involved isolation and loneliness, but I think due to minimal dialogue in Revenant, I think we're dealing with a performance by DiCaprio that is more facial/emotional/physical based. In which case, I think he's the stronger performer in terms of offering a diverse range.
Plus, his role required on location shooting in the cold, sometimes naked, while eating REAL bison liver and raw fish. Physically, I think DiCaprio had the more sacrificial, punishing role.

Super, extremely, immensely shocked to see Mad Max: Fury Road have a nomination for Best Picture!!! It's not like The Academy even recognizes that genre of film in the first place. To think of all the great scifi flicks that have been passed over, this is not the one I would have thought to break through to the stuffed shirts who make the nominations.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Fury Road. It made up nicely for the hot mess that was Thunderdome. Hardly a Best Picture contender though. I'd gladly have seen it nominated it for several of the lesser categories (FX, score, makeup, editing, etc) and even have won a couple, but Best Picture is a big leap, and IMO, undeserved.

Do remember that director George Miller has technically some Oscar-cred to his name, having been nominated AND awarded for Lorenzo's Oil, Happy Feet, and Babe in the City.
This gave him SERIOUS clout going into the award season for Oscars. Apparently the voters have not forgotten his past efforts.
I personally am rooting for Fury Road but I think Revenant will sweep most categories.

Disappointed that Creed is not in the Best Picture category.
