Empire Strikes Back was directed by Lucas Drama teacher who had no experience in science fiction and it arguably turns out to be the best movie in the franchise.

Absolutely great points. A filmmaker who knows the art form would indeed be best suited for these projects; so long as they are respectful of the source. That is a danger. In Nolan's case I thought every change was for the better save killing off Harvey and Batman's retirement at the beginning of TDKR.
