Thanks P1X. I'm not real crazy about the fact that there are competing formats for HD and was going to wait it out. I went with the Toshiba for several reasons. The price is much cheaper than the Blu-ray sets. I needed a new player to unconvert my DVDs so why not get one that can play HD-DVDs in the process. I know I am going to get a PS3 when it comes out. It wil come with a Blu-ray player so that will cover me as far as Blu-ray goes.
I can tell you that the picture from the Toshiba HD-DVD player is just gorgeous. I only have a handful of HD-DVDs right now (Serenity and Chronicles of Rid****) but I am blown away. And it does a great job on the upconverts too. I am one happy camper right now.

i'm not very happy at all too about the two competing formats. as a consumer eagerly waiting to make the jump into this new medium i find it quite frustrating to have to choose. it's almost a leap of chance here. hardware and price wise i'm leaning towards the HD-DVD camp but the movie titles i'd rather watch are on blu ray's side (underworld: evolution, fifth element, black hawk down, terminator 2, etc). i'm going to hook up my upconverting dvd player (http://oppodigital.com) to the new TV and see how it performs. i know it won't look as good playing a true HD source though. arrrrgh! this really bleeps me to no end!

bose has a new sound system that is two speaker and a sub that connects straight to the tv, similar to the 321 system but without the receiver. And you could still use the hd-dvd player. That would be my route, the bose system is under $500.

The transfer on Fifth Element is crap when compared to the Superbit.

Studio Canal is releasing an HD-DVD of T2 in the UK. It will be playable in the HDA1.

All the films on BR are currently Mpeg2 and have yet to use two advance compression formats (VC1, AVC).
