I think there's a select group that can still get by on past glories, even when their later stuff stinks the joint up....

I think that's true as long as they end their career with more pluses than minuses...
Have you noticed the backlash JR Jr is getting lately, people who wouldn't've criticised his runs on Uncanny or Man Without Fear are suddenly lambasting those art details too just because his art on Avengers is a bit poor.
