Right. This was in the Batman Beyond animated series when the older Barbara, now as commissioner. reveals this to Terry.

I am a HUGE fan of the graphic novel. I have read it many times and I own an original Brian Bolland page from the book so I think I am about as big a fan of this work as there is. I saw the movie in San Diego at Comic Con with 4500 other people. Before the movie started there was a brief discussion with the cast, writers and directors. Azzarello and Timm could not have been more proud of the movie and couldn't stop congratulating themselves about it. I knew there was a problem when they did not mention either Alan Moore or Brian Bolland at all...shameful. For those who do not know, the book was written by Moore and drawn by Brian Bolland...it is a masterpiece.
The movie was terrible for a variety of reasons including but not limited to the fact that the whole prelude to the Killing Joke was an unnecessary tack on that actually took away from Batgirl's character instead of adding to it:
SPOILERS BELOW!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
1. She allows a mobster (ludicrously named "Paris France") to stalk her and actually encourages him.
2. She allows her emotions to override her common sense and training to ludicrous and almost fatal effect.
3. She forces herself onto a "mostly" unwilling Batman.
4. She shows no strength of will or the intelligence for which has become a crucial part of Batman's family.
5. The sex scene was entirely unnecessary and added zero to the plot. It was uncomfortable and ruined the father/mentor relationship between the characters which was far more compelling.
6. In the comic, when Barbara is in the hospital, Batman goes to see her and he says something to the effect, "Barbara, its Bruce"--he does not say Batman. That line, which was cut from the movie, shows how much he cared for Barbara. He was there for her as her friend not as Batman even though he was in costume.
Now, what should have been the prelude is WHY Batman decides to go to Arkham Asylum to talk with the Joker in the first place...This is NEVER discussed/explained in the movie or the graphic novel. That is something I wanted to see. What was tacked on was shameful, masturbation material that Azzarello and Timm dreamed up to further Timm's view from Batman Beyond that Bruce and Barabara had an affair while she was with Dick. Controversy aside, it diminishes a fantastic work that has stood the test of time for decades. It shows Barbara as a willful and emotional woman who makes massive misjudgments because her crush on Batman is unrequited. I am glad some people enjoy it but I feel the same way about this as I did about Batman v. Superman...a murderous Batman and depressed Superman just aren't characters I like or want to watch again. It is an insult to 75 years of comics and those who love these characters.

Great, genuine and heartfelt review that I endorse and agree with 110%. Only thing that I would add it that the prequel additions also sullied the relationship between Batman and Jim Gordon with the awful porn plot BS trope of "my best friends daughter."

watched it last night, def wasn't as good as i was expecting it to be. and seemed like they were throwing in adult content here and there in places where it didn't need to be just to have an R rating.
i will admit. i have never read the graphic novel. but from all the hype everyone says how great of a story it was, this DVD never lived up to that hype. for me at least.

This will be my first Batman animated film not purchased.

It's a 48 Prestige One-shot. They had to add something to add filler. They say so in the making of!

That is because Moore wants nothing to do with any of his work being turned into film/TV shows & who can blame him:
- From Hell
- League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
- From Hell
- Swamp Thing
- V For Vendetta
He is never listed on the credits of anything he wrote now & as far as I know, refuses payment
