I find that a lot of older westerns (mid 60's and earlier) very much tend to be a product of their time. That doesn't mean they can't still be good, or enjoyable, but you often have to make certain allowances with many of them on that basis, But with Warlock it felt much more 'timeless', in that you could put it out tomorrow with the same script and performances and it'd still be well recieved.
It's very much a character based Western, and the main characters aren't the traditional one dimensional stereotypes that you usually see with a lot of westerns of the era (or since for that matter), but instead have a bit more depth and complexity to them, perhaps due to it being based on a novel that was quite well recieved critically back in the day, and also coming from a film maker who was part of McCarthy's communist witch hunt, and who spent time in prison because of it. It probably also adds to the authentic feel of the characters that they were obviously partly inspired by the likes of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Wild Bill Hickok.
Whatever the reason it's a damn good film, and if you like a good western then this is a must see in my books.
