I would unfortunately think so. I had three people in my family/friend circle who made comments questioning how safe it was to go to the film. I promptly let them all know how preposterous it is to skip things in life out of fear for the unlikely.

I was not alone however. A co-worker was out on a date night and his wife was acting quite out of character; not wanting to go out, complaining, making excuses not to go out. When he finally challenged her on her behaviour she broke down and disclosed that she was scared of a repeat of the Colorado incident. They went but he said it took her 40 minutes to settle in and stop looking at the door.

I am one person and I live outside the United States but if I have four examples of folks not going or having to be coerced I imagine that that number can be multiplied by thousands for North America.

I know of some people (who clearly don't understand how many people's livelihoods are tied to films) that boycotted DKR in response to the Colorado tragedy.

I also know one of the nuttier news networks was suggesting that people outright BOYCOTT the movie to send a message. I guess that message would be "we're @ssholes"?

I was thinking no - but apparently they did! I am shocked that people really thought this was going to happen over and over again rather than an isolated incident.
