Different people have different reasons. Some people see it as the ultimate realization of love. Some see it as a prize or status symbol, for better or worse. Some have religious or family obligations. Sometimes it's financial (tax breaks and such) or for reasons like medical situations (insurance and medical paperwork, discussions, visits, etc).

I agree on that. Have serious discussions with your partner on your wants, needs, and desires... make decisions for your lives together from there in whatever form that takes. For some people that means marriage... for some domestic partnership... for others just cohabitation. Be honest to yourselves and do what's best for you in whatever form that takes.
