That's right. They are fired (baked) at such high temperatures, that they become strong (resistant to heat, and weight), but brittle. Toilets and bricks are baked the same way. No one's ever seen a toilet or brick melt, unless they were in a nuclear explosion. But take a hammer to one, and you'll crack it pretty easily. I've worked on brick walkways, and it's amazingly easy to chisel a brick into the shape you want.

Our statues lean because they're mostly 'glue', i.e. plastic resin. I believe dao2 mentioned a detail regarding XM (I don't know whether it's true, but easily could be), that in addition to using porcelain powder, they may use a higher ratio of powder to resin, which would increase the heat resistance and strength (and weight), but potentially make them more brittle.

It's possible (but I'm guessing not likely) that XM statues are made from old toilets! Porcelain powder could be made by pulverizing any porcelain product, but it may just come from a factory that fires the raw materials and pulverizes it immediately. I'm not sure how much recycling goes on.

Keeping laying down that education Zen...

Here is a specific thread for this piece.

For sure. That's been the case for many years now. I think when I started, around ten years ago, Bowen was still making statues that were mostly one piece. But they were smaller (1/6-1/7) and simpler. Today's statues are so much more complex, as you know.

These figures are more akin to, and have more in common with static dolls. I don't see this as a bad thing, being a doll collector (for those in the know) carries a lot of artistic and high end connotations.

I'd be happy to see a clearly defined split between pure statues (which are rare as can be - in the traditional sense) - and these hybrid dolls.

The Lladro piece is neither "statue" or doll, but would fit more within the category of figurine......ah, but we humans love our categories don't we?
Yeah, I try not to think about it. haha Certainly, seeing all the 'pieces' to that 1/3 Predator dissuades me from buying that 'statue', no matter how awesome the finished product looks.

I believe Lladro themselves use the term 'figurine' for their product. Whatever their marketing department deems most 'premium' sounding...
