It has been well documented over the years how difficult it is to achieve GOOD human likenesses. This has been a constant struggle even from companies like Attakus and Sideshow who have traditionally dominated figures markets and for good reason.
If you want monsters and superheroes and droids and Vader etc you can't beat Sideshow or Attakus.
But Han? Luke? Leia? Aragorn? Frodo? Nothing but death and destruction across the board.
This is especially striking considering that some of the best portrait sculptors in the world work for these guys. Andy Bergoltz is famous for his work in this area and even he has problems nailing the likeness on occasion. And he's the only one in my opinion who even comes close on a regular basis.
This then brings us to the old debate about free style sculptor interpretation versus laser scans for likeness. I see the pros and cons of each and the arguments of both but I have to say that the latest batch of products from Gentle Giant have convinced me.
Laser scans all the way.
The Slave Leia by GG is unprecedented in its accuracy. I've only seen such detail in one of those wax museums. Carrie Fisher herself would be stunned. Not only is this the best likeness of Leia but it is the best BY FAR. BY FAR! I had thought that the Leia face done by Andy for the Sideshow PF was outstanding but even that cannot compare with this one.
And the Aragorn Bust by GG is the ONLY product that nails Viggo Mortenson's likeness. For Lord of the Ring's fans this is an old saw and and old joke. Apparently Viggo has one of the hardest faces to sculp EVER. NO ONE has nailed it . . . until now. And folks we are talking about a LOT of attempts many by the Weta artists who did the effects for the movie. Some of those sculpts were approved by Viggo himself! The Aragorn as Ranger statue, the Elessar full size, Aragorn bust, Aragorn at the Black Gates, the recent 12 inch figure . . . all failures in the likeness department.
I think laser scanning is going to be the way to go for human sculpts in the future. The quality simply can't be denied.

The GG leia is fantastic!!! I can't believe how much detail GG got into the statue with things like her arm muscles being seena and slight wrinkles in the skin. The facial sculpt is also unbelievable.
