Guardian Ganthet statue sculpted by Sam Greenwell (2002)

DC Direct Guardian Ganthet statue sculpted by Sam Greenwell (2002).
Cold cast porcelain medium statue - 5 inches tall, 4 inches wide, limited to 1000 pieces.
Original retail price: $49.95

Almost as old as time itself, the immortal Guardians of the Universe have taken it upon themselves to watch over the cosmos. To aid them, the Guardians created the Green Lantern Corps, a galactic police force armed with the power ring that transformed their every thought into reality. First among them brotherhood of the Guardians was Ganthet, a brilliant being, yet enigmatic even for his race.

A vintage sculpture from one of the original and well-travelled masters of DC Direct Sam Greenwell.

Sculpt: While I'm not generally a fan of museum poses, it actually works well here as the pose captures the sombre and reflective nature of the character, which is key to any production of a piece. In this regard, the sculpture works really well.

As was often the case with sculptures produced 10+ years ago, the simplicity gives the piece a classic type look, which is likely why still looks as good.

Paint: Again, taking into account how much the medium has evolved in the past 15 years, I must say I am very impressed with how well the paint has withstood the test of time. Not a single chip or crack or noticeable dulling of paint to be seen.

Base: Quaint, but works. The lantern insignia was a nice touch. I'll take that over a bland black base any day.

Accuracy: A worthy tribute to the original designs and character.

The negative: None that I can see. The price is right and the size is in scale with what DC Direct was producing at the time.

Grade: 8/10 - A- rating
