Childhood Pop Culture Staples

I was born in 1960, was a child in the ‘60s and was a teen in the ‘70s. There are some pop culture indulgences from my childhood that I feel have defined me as an adult and, happily, have stayed with me to this day. I?ll break them out here, but I thought it?d be fun for us all to share what yours were, too.

Comic Books:

Marvel Comics. Specifically Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, The Avengers, Thor, Fantastic Four, Tomb of Dracula and Conan The Barbarian. There were others I loved, too, but this list was my mainstay.

Television:

- Star Trek
- Dark Shadows
- Batman (?66)
- The Wild Wild West
- Chiller Theater - loved these old schlock horror films. Plenty of great Vincent Price films!

Comedy:

- Abbott & Costello - I watched their TV show episodes constantly. They made me howl with laughter
- Bill Cosby - despise him now and threw all his stand up CDs and albums in the trash when word came out on him recently but, as a kid, I loved his bits and listened to his albums constantly.

Movies:

- Jaws
- Star Wars (original trilogy)
- Hammer Studios? Horror Movies, too many to reference but especially any movie with Christopher Lee as Dracula and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing
- All the Universal Monster Movies
- Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. I never tire of watching this. One of my most favorite movies ever.

Books:

- The Hobbit
- Lord Of The Rings
- Dark Shadows trade book series
- Dracula (scared me to death reading it as a kid)

Games:

- Monopoly
- Mille Bournes (played with my family)

Sports (okay, maybe this isn?t considered pop culture but I?m including it):

- Boston Red Sox. The Sox of the ?60s and ?70s were one of my great loves.

Music:

- Little Feat

Evel Knievel

Nike (can’t stand the company now)

Wrist bands - blue ones like George Brett wore

George Brett - KC Royals

Godzilla

Members Only jacket

Star Wars

World War II model airplanes

My BB gun

Ben Cooper Halloween masks.

Mister H, are you from KC? We lived there from 1997 - 2011. You’ll appreciate that my company hosted a corporate box for our biggest clients at Kauffman Stadium and we had George Brett attend to entertain our guests. He was raucous and hilarious, just as you’d expect him to be. He came up to me and in a mock challenge asked me if he was my favorite baseball player, and I said “no.” His scowl turned around when I said my favorite ball player was Carl Yastrzemski, at which point he grabbed both my shoulders and yelled out “Mine too!” We then geeked out together about our favorite Yaz stories. The guy is a riot!

Actually I’m from Oslo but I did most of my growing up in KC. Lots of fond memories watching Brett, W. Wilson, F. White and Dan Quisenberry with the old man. Awesome story about Brett. I always heard he was hilarious.

That's great, he comes across as a fun dude in interviews. His meltdown during the pine tar incident is one of the great moments in baseball history, and justified I might add
