stupid cell phone people, like they can't live without that damn thing.

I'm on the side of that judge, whoever played dumb without turning in the cellphone in should be ashamed.

I look at things this way.

We have a ban on cellphones in courtrooms for a reason. Let's say you're a defendant in a criminal case, and because of someone's cell phone, a key word, or phrase isn't heard, and then let's say that bit of evidence would have set you free.

OR, the other way around. Cellphones are a nuisance and a scourge in every day life, as they are not used judiciously. I went to see the mist. Guess what? 3 people talking on cell phones through out the movie.

A judge who asks people to obey the rules isn't out of line when he wants to know who's disrupting his proceedings. He's not a crazy judge, and if I were in his court, I'd want a guy like him hearing my case, because he's not going to allow something like someone's lack of consideration for the rules to get in the way of justice being done.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I hate cellphones as much as anyone, but come on. He wasnt crazy asking to know who it was. He went crazy when he threatened innocent people to be thrown in jail on the sole ability that HE is all powerful and can throw anyone he wants in jail. Its a misconduct issue, not a stupid person issue.

And think of it this way. The guy that had the cellphone probably didnt learn **** from it. Hell he probably got a nice settlement, talk about making out on your idiocy.

Agreed! It's really out of controll, now. I can't go anywhere w/o some jacka$$ sharing his conversation with the world.
I really think it has a lot to do with the modern citizen's fear of ever being alone. The average cell-phone rambler just can't stand to be alone with their own thoughts. They're scared of having to think about "things" and hense, have to fill the quiet times with meaningless banter rather than contemplate their lives.

I'm a court officer in a City Court a few counties south of Niagara where this judge presided and let me tell you....somebody REALLY dropped the ball. In my court, we caution everyone that enters with a cell phone to either power it down or set it to silent mode. If someone's cell phone does ring, we have that person leave the courtroom and voucher the phone into a property locker if that person wishes to re-enter the courtroom. The judge was WAY out of line ordering everyone into custody, but whoever was working in that court in an official law enforcement capacity should not have followed the judges order to jail the entire audience. There are rules and procedures and in this case it looks like they were all disregarded. Anyone that thinks a judge is all powerful and can do whatever they want is naiive. Many times in my career I have told a judge that they can't "order" someone to do certain things. There must be legal grounds for jailing for contempt of court and other offenses. Whoever worked with this judge should have taken control of the situation (like escorting the judge from the bench back to chambers to calm down before he did something stupid). Instead, well....you heard what happened. Definitely a poorly handled situation!

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Learn it and remeber it. A judge is not a dictator he must follow the law and he just violated 46 peoples rights. Judges like this should not be on the bench. I hope I don't get a judge like this if I every went to court. Well the Judge is now unemployed.

As an attorney with a cel phone, I can tell you I have only forgotten to turn off my ringer once but I did forget. Everyone makes a mistake. It isn't like the ringer was a constant disruption it must have lasted for about 2 seconds...they were right to toss him off the bench. Judges must use sound and rationale judgment at all times when on the bench or they lose all credibility.

It's not about that few seconds ring tone anymore, like you said everyone have that senior moment.
It's now about that the cell phone owner who played dumb and refused to turned in the cell phone.

For me that cell phone owner is ignoring that judge, disrespecting his position by playing dumb, plus the judge warned them in advance but the owner still decided not to turn in the cell phone, which is really a shame

He could have confiscated all the phones and checked whose phones still had their ring tones on.
