I didn't try doing that, but all of the pieces (frame, sides, top, and bottom) are shipped unassembled. You have to put everything together so you could leave out the side acrylic. The frame should stay stable because it's pretty solid. You should send Moducase an email about if it's important enough to you to factor into your decision to buy any of their units.

I think both color options look good, but I have some white Moducases on order simply because all my other shelves are white.
