Thumbs up My complete Motor City Comic Con haul

Back on Friday, I posted up the spectacular He-Man sketch I got from Franchesco. Now, ladies and germs, is the rest of my haul from the show.

And for completion's sake, here's Franchesco again:

I also got some prints from Shane Davis, Tim Sale, Aaron Lopresti, and Ale Garza, since their sketch fees were out of my range. But what I got from them was beautiful stuff regardless.

All in all, not a bad batch by any means. But I think there's no denying that Franchesco's He-Man is the showstopper of the lot.

Wow that's one hell of a take at a con! Nice pickups.

What are Tim Sales rates these days?

At Heroes 2010 he was charging $100 for a 15-minute sketch.

I think it was $175 at MCCC. For me, $60 is where I draw the line at sketches drawn at the cons. I simply don't have the coin for the fastpass stuff. (Franchesco's stuff runs $100, but that's all prepay before the con, so I can get that out of the way ahead of time.)

I paid $5-30 for the sketches overall. The Dick Tracy ran $60, but that was because the sketch required color work due to the subject matter. Otherwise I try to keep it inexpensive.

That was the last sketch I got at the show, actually. After all the other stuff I'd gotten, it felt like the perfect note to end on.

What was really funny about the con was the way the artists reacted to the Tom Grummett Superman commission I got from this forum. I had it in one of my portfolios (the Dick Tracy sketch and most of the prints needed to be stored therein), and it was not uncommon for the artists to take it and run off to show their buddies. I even had reactions ranging from requests to ink it (John Livesay) to being told not to ink it in any capacity and leave it as is (Angel Medina). That art really struck a chord with the guys in the artists alley, as many of them said point-blank that it was the best art in my collection and that it would have been a lesser work in the hands of any other artist. Which is a testament to Grummett's talent, it must be said. It's not every day that a private commission causes this much of a stir.

I saw him working on something, but I don't know if it was a sketch or actual project work. I didn't think to ask.

By the by, I'd mentioned in my thread about Franchesco's He-Man that I might engage him to do a riff on the old "Superman smashes his way out of chains" gag that Joe Shuster started and Neal Adams polished to a high gloss. Well, that's gone from "might" to "will definitely happen." Barring any unforeseen scheduling conflicts preventing him from attending Detroit Fanfare, Franchesco's getting his shot at the Fleischer Superman. I'm looking forward to seeing his take on it, especially after the bang-up job he did with He-Man.

$5 for each sketch card, $80 for a 9 x 12 single character. She, too, is slated for Detroit Fanfare, so I'll probably be getting some more of her cards there.
