you don't need a fancy camera at all . . . just play around and experiment . . in the digital age .. you can't lose

by the looks of it i'm assuming you're just using continuous lights?

That's also the other great thing about non moving small subjects, if you don't have any pro gear you can rig a few desk lamps and get some cool effects like those. I have a picture of my sinister bust that looks great, I shot with just a two desk lights and a piece of vellum cus I was too lazy to pull out all my lighting gear.

i actually use some mini par lamps with adjustable dimmers.

but i agree . . pro gear is totally unnecessary if you don't know how to light something with whats around.

yeah vellum works great as diffusion because you don't get the creases from fabric diffusers on reflective surfaces, that and its also good in a pinch.

so interesting what different backgrounds bring to the table . . i have a theater background, and i just use gel diffusion . . . no pro photo anything . . pretty ghetto rigged kind of thing
