I wish they would have just started over with a fresh take.

I don't think they needed to start over necessarily but there simply was too much plain old copying of the prior movies. Superman's smile while flying into space, that bit about flying being a statistically safer mode of transportation vs. cars, Lex stating his father's advice about real estate. If they'd just picked up where they left off with Superman II but moved FORWARD that would have been better.
Or started over, as with Batman Begins.
Either way.

I went to a general store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specifically.

Sometimes when I have little to no expectation of a movie, I seem to enjoy it a lot. For example, Hulk, Hellboy, The Crow...I completely went in not having really high hopes because I have no profound love for the characters. And even though some people think those movies were pretty good to mediocre, I enjoyed them.
So was my position with Superman Returns. I thought it would just be ok, and I thought I would come out and be floored. I like Supes, but Im not a HUGE fan. And I thought I would probably really enjoy it.
But it was only ok. There were no moments were I was blown away, no moments like, Yay! Its Superman! Just...blah.
(though saving the airplane was cool)
That being said, it doesnt crack the top ten.
Hey, I have an idea...

SO what, Superman now has a son thats like a mutant who can tap into his strength when under emotional stress or anger.
Sounds like the Hulk.
Well, if you cant beat 'em, make 'em! Eh Supes!
And why are all the men in Lois' life named after Robin(s)? Husband Richard, son named Jason. What, is she gonna have a brother named Tim next?

Yeah, clearly, but for me it didn't work. I might as well watch the Chris Reeve films.
