Zorro reboot

According to Deadline, Sony has hired playwright Chris Boal to pen the reboot.

In the words of Deadline‘s Mike Fleming Jr., the Zorro reboot will be:

“[L]ess traditional swashbuckler, and more of a ‘Dark Knight’-style unveiling of the character with a new backstory, gritty realism and emotional core. There will be swordplay, combined with the martial arts that came from Europe and created a deadly combination of action and lethal fighting systems that combined swords, daggers, grappling and bare knuckles.”

I was never really a fan of Zorro. A character really deserving of a reboot is the Shadow.

I love Zorro, but I agree with your comment. The descriptors in the original post fit The Shadow perfectly...

"more of a ‘Dark Knight’-style"
"gritty realism"
"martial arts"

Associating those phrases with Zorro makes me cringe, as that's not Zorro at all. It's lighthearted swashbuckling adventure.

That is truly the charm right there. If they are looking for a billion dollar franchise to mimic it should be Pirates of the Caribbean, not TDK.

Agree. If it's a modern take and setting for Zorro I could understand it but if it's a period piece then I'm with the rest of you.
