I couldn't read the book either. And generally, I'm not into the medieval stuff either. But if you make it through the first movie in full, you'll be hooked.

I've never read the book myself, but I'm a big fan of the movie.
You should definitely give it a go when you have ten hours or so to spare. lol

I can't even imagine the work you could produce related to that film. With the hobbit coming out, it would be great timing. Check the sideshow website for some of the related art. The creatures, monsters, and characters are incredible!! There are great likenesses waiting to be captured.

I'd love to see a Gandalf The Grey life size piece.

Hey Mike,
any advice on getting your name out there? aside from having a portfolio in line and the talent to do the job, what's the best way to pursue the dream? do you just kind of say "hey guys check this out."? and send in some work. or do THEY usually come to YOU.

Also, I know everyone is different preference wise when it comes to tools but I was wondering if you might have a picture or 5-10 or more tools you can't live without for sculpting.

thanks for your time and all the inspiration that you have given us fellow sculptors.

hey mike ,

I was wondering if you could answer a few of my questions when you have a chance. It would be greatly appreciated.

1. To start off my biggest question... how'd you learn your anatomy?

2. why do you prefer wed clay?

3. when starting a sculpt do you start with a profile or do you begin working it in the round?

4. how do you get your sculpts so smooth... like your wonderful bela lugosi sculpt you just posted pics of.

5. and lastly... i am aware my questions never end...but i just have to know...are you a scraper or an adder when you sculpt?

hope you don't mind answering all these questions... i may be taking advantage of the title of this post ,

thanks for anything you can offer,

sam

Sam

1) Boring but..just by looking, drawing superheroes as a kid. I still have to look at images when it involves intricate muscles.

2) Well I prefer it for large scale. Cheap and quick but it has its disadvantages also.

3) I start with the whole thing, mainly the face.

4) Thanks.Brushes and sponges.

5)I think you could call me an adder...til I add too much, then I'm a scraper
