Sculpting Books Please

Hello fellas,

I've been a collector of statue for years, statues by Bowen Designs, Sideshow etc., and now I want to attempt a sculpt.

As I am ignorant in the field of sculpting I was hoping you gentlemen could refer some books on sculpting for beginners. NO WEBSITES. Martin Canal's tutorial is awesome but I simply can't focus on the computer. I simply have a short attention span when learning from the computer.

I don't know anything about sculpting. I have so many question such as what type of clay to use? Will the clay harden? What tools do I need? And several others questions which hoping can be answered by a good book.

Thank you

The Human Figure in Clay by Mark A. Dennis.

It is the penultimate book for beginners. About $35.00 at Amazon.

Check it out!

alejandro175,

I don't know of any singular book that answers your questions. I'm sure if you ask on this and other forums about which clay or material to use and such, you'll get a variety of answers -- the main one being "Depends". Everybody has their favorite: Super Sculpey, Casteline, Aves Apoxy Sculpt, Toy Wax (multiple brands), Chavant NSP, etc...

Super Sculpey (regular pink or Gray Firm) is a standard for making sculptures for Bowen type statues. It hardens when baked in the oven, but otherwise remains soft and workable for weeks (depending upon your climate and how fresh the clay is). This gives you the ability to sculpt a peice, bake it (to set that part), then either finish it with sanding and polishing, or add on to it. If you make a mistake, the part can be dremeled down.

I have yet to see a book that covers the best tools to use for working Super Sculpey and the techniques to do so. However, a variety of loop tools, and rake tools (small in both cases) are generally used by sculptors for all clay mediums and will work well on Super Sculpey.

Building armatures can be an art all of its own and again will vary from sculptor to sculptor and from project to project. A typical armature that is workable for Full Scale (by that I mean the full figure not life size), is one that has removable head, arms and sometimes legs. If you ask this forum how to make one (based on what you intend to make),they can give you some options.

Other than that -- Anatomy books and Body Building magazines are the best reference books you can have for this business.

I know you said you didn't like to read instructional stuff off your computer, but if just print out the info there, here's a great reference for new sculptors:

Dan Perez Studios

The articles are great reference for what you want to do.
