I think it's cult status in popular culture is well deserved. Now, . . . bring on the remake with Christian Bale as Tony Montana

Well lads, I will have to agree to disagree on this one. I thought the story was fantastic . . . the rise to power, the self destruction . . . I loved it. And sure Pacino is a bit OTT but again that under-pinned the his character "Nothing exceeds like excess" for Tony. He had just the right mix of campy, villainy and even a little likeability. Better than Godfather or Goodfellas ? Nope . . . but definitely right up there in crime sagas for me

Cheese aside I still think its overrated. The film is very much a period piece and I understand it is depicting a world of excess but a lot of the film has not aged well. As for the music I guess you either love or hate it but personally I hated it and ironically I love the 80's.
Oliver Stone's screenplay is far to simplistic and Brian DePalma's Direction is to poorly paced for me to consider it anything more than just average at best. Some of the acting, even Pacino at times was a bit to over the top for me, cartoonish even.
If you were to base the quality of the film on how it's status has evolved in popular culture as Marvelito pointed out you'd think this was the Godfather or something. For me personally it wouldn't even rank in my top 10 gangster films. Its just not in the same league as The Godfather I and II, Goodfellas or even DePalma and Pacino's later work together in Carlito's Way.
