All 3 of those price tags are a pass for me. Not necessarily the price itself, but what you get for it. I don't even stand in line for free head sketches, much less $400 ones. Busts, for 500 bucks...no way in hell if its pencils. $1000 full figures...no way in hell at a convention for a pencil or marker piece. Only commissions I do $1K and over for are paintings (so far). Might do $1-2K on inked commissions...but definitely not for a single figure.

Tell me about it. I was hoping to get a sketch from Tony Moore at an upcoming convention over here, but he's asking $300 for a quick sharpie headsketch, $500 for a sketch of the day-like colour bust and $1000 for a fully pencilled, inked and rendered piece - on 8.5x11 card stock!

These prices make me extremely gunshy. While I'm not generally afraid to pay big bucks for artwork, at these rates, I feel the need to see what I am buying first. Should you wish to later move or sell the piece (i.e., you need cash or want to buy something else), commissions are virtually impossible to resell at a decent return. Now, before this turns into a "I never buy to sell ever" or "I'm being buried with my artwork because I'm a real fan" argument (like we see in the statue sections), some of us have appreciated being able to sell piece to fund later purchases. Losing or limiting that component is definitely a downside to commissions.

I agree with that. When I'm going to spend some decent money on something, I am cautious to get a character (and a "name" artist) that has some "resale" value to it. On more obscure, indie type characters, they're really more for me, and I don't want to spend a lot of money on them b/c if I ever do need to sell, I'd never get anywhere close to my money back on them. My general rule of thumb is $250 on a commission, tops. I have broken that only once ($300 for a Lee Weeks full body 9x12) and will probably break it at C2E2 this year ($350 for a 2+ character painted commission). Outside of that, it's just way too hard for me to justify spending that kind of money. Can you imagine getting $40-$50 for 5 minutes work???? (Stegman, Cheung). That's just insane to me. I guess that's a big reason why I really try to find who I believe are the up-and-coming artists who have loads of talent but just haven't hit it big...yet. And I keep going back to the well until the prices get out of reach!

I should point out that there are still many artists....published big name folks that are doing pieces at far more affordable prices than this....

Never really saw the appeal of Tony Moore's stuff. So, he did a whole 6 issues of Walking Dead...whoopee. Don't find the art itself all that nice...so I find the prices he wants ridiculous...but I guess there are Walking Dead fanatics out there willing to pay it.

i wonder with some of these guys if folks are paying the ask...a whilee back, a big name artist asked for a grand (maybe more) for a pencil only no background piece...i only saw one of them gget done....wonder whether folks balked and didnt pay the ask

When I was still practicing law, that's about the rate my firm was billing clients for my work - not that I saw it in my own salary. Too bad I can't draw worth a damn.
As for some of these prices, I've heard some artists qualifying the really high rates as a filter so they can interact with more fans.
