The annual holy cow have prices gone nuts thread!!!
$400 headshots
$500 busts :
$1000 full figures
Can we all officially agree that at this point artists and their prices have gone absolutely out of control?? Not to mention the general poor customer service that some of them exhibit.
I'm sniffing around prices for an upcoming con and prices for some artists have doubled from what they were a year ago.
Who can afford these prices anymore?

I agree..but what can ya do? Not being rude but used to be you could get a simple pencil full body from an artists for couple hundred. Now even many unpublished or main stream artists are asking 100.00 or more ..for busts

It's got a lot to do with ebay and the market itself. This was a quiet hobby for a long time and now it's major business.

I know some people will point to OA as the better way to go anyway, but I still prefer getting a piece that was initiated by and drawn specifically for me by an artist I enjoy.
I agree that the prices these days are ridiculous and very disappointing. I was fortunate at the last con I attended to be able to get three small pieces from established names for a total of $110 - a real steal, but then again, it was a small show. At my next con, I don't think I will be able to get a single piece from any established artist for less than $100. Ugh. It means that I have to bypass artists whose work I have enjoyed in the past and would love to pick up another piece from because I have to spend my money on artists I may not get the chance to see again.

But I mean for the 500 and up, some of you guys still pay it. When it's that high, though, for me, you're just paying for the name and not necessarily the piece itself. It's just how it goes.

OA is still relatively cheap, there's your other option.

I've been lucky in the past where I have been able to pay those prices for a piece I loved.
Now that I'm a student again I struggle with this hobby and am usually selling things to fund my collection.
It is very rare for me to afford anything other than a headshot on a jam piece these days, and even with something that small some artists have priced themselves out of reach. *cough* $150 for a 3.5x3.5 headshot from Jim Cheung *cough*.

You're late. I thought this thread is usually posted by at least the end of January.

He did our 3"x3" for $50/5 minute sketch. iPhone timer on the table. If I remember correctly, went over by about 15 seconds.
