Babylon 5 - is it worth the time?

I've heard so many good things about this series, yet I'd never seen an episode until last night. It's free on Hulu, so I tried to watch the pilot but just couldn't finish it.

Everything about it was bad - the story, the acting, the music... I gave up about halfway through. If I can't stand the pilot, should I stick with it?

Admittedly, I wasn't impressed with the pilot episode of Star Trek:TNG, but I stuck with it and was rewarded with great storylines later on. Is Babylon 5 a similar situation?

Totally worth it.

The first season is really a prologue, things don't really kick off until the second season...

Absolutely! I found B5 to be one of the BEST Sci-Fi series EVER! (I'm a classic Star Trek fan and B5 IMO blows it away.). When this was on TV I could not wait for each weeks episodes! JMS did such a good job with the plot/story and character development. Seasons 1 thru 4 takes you through the story arch. I found season 5 kind of weak after the sensational season 4 finale.

Agreed 100%, I think JMS wanted this season to be a sort of epilogue but for me it just doesn't work.

Babylon 5 is definitely a great series, and well worth checking out.

The main problem with season 5 is that a lot of the storylines that were to continue in that season got wrapped up by the end of season 4 when it became apparent that WB were not going to renew the series. Then PTEN picked the show up, and JMS had to go with the storylines that he had left, which were a little underwhelming.

Starts off a little slow but the characters really develop in the second season. I loved it and you'll see that the new Battlestar Galactica stole quite a bit from this series.
