Whedon is perfect for The Avengers as he actually knows how to make an ensemble picture. His role as Director is what makes me believe it will work.
That said Avengers better be one giant money shot.

About 2 years ago some people in work were talking about the plan to make a film with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor Etc. The girl talking about it was trying to think what it was going to be called. I chipped in and said "The Avengers", and they all laughed at me, because in the UK the Avengers was an old 60's tv show and crap movie from the 90's. Dammit, does 20 years reading comics count for nothing? If I brought the subject up now they wouldnt remember, so I can never redeem that moment.
