PS3 as a Blue-ray player....

Wasnt sure where to post this but thought it would be ok here.
I have an HD-DVD player but am now opting to go dual format and was wondering if any of you have both an HD-DVD player and also A PS3 player as a blue-ray player.
What are your thoughts on it and is it any good as a BD player?
I want a PS3 as its nearly half the price of a stand alone bd player.

Any advice appreciated.
Regards,
Ray

It is actually considered one of the best players released.

Sony releases upgrade patches all the time for it.

Best Blu-Ray player you can buy IMO...you can play games and have one powerful HTPC too.

I agree with G. Its a very nice piece of equipment with full 1080p output capability. The sound and picture is great.

PS3, is without question, the best Blu-Ray player. Especially for the features Gruson mentioned above.

It made me regret the building of my HTPC.

I have a PS3 and use it almost exclusively for movies. Of course if they ever start coming out with decent games that might change. I think it is a great player and the regular, easy to download and install firmware upgrades are a nice touch.

PS3 is probably the best value for money Blue Ray player as last time i checked, they players are still very expensive.

I have heard some problems with them in regards to lip-sync problems and problems with Dolby True. I'm not sure if these issues have been now fixed with patches...

Dang Zurb, I couldn't have said it any better. I can tell you first hand that the PS3 is a much better player than the new Sony BDP S300 player. The PS3 excels in the sound department. I have the new Onkyo TX SR605 that can do all the latest standards (Dolby True HD, DTS HD MA, and everything else), and when I played Aeon Flux last night I was literally blown away by the beginning scene where the fly was buzzing around. I swear to God I wanted to slap the air because it literally sounded like it was flying around my head. The thing is, its the only movie I have tried so far and the disc is only encoded in Dolby Digital. I could just imagine how it sounds if it was encoded in a lossless audio format!

The picture quality is awesome and the sound is even more impressive. Too bad they don't have any PS3 games to play. It does play PS2 games so I am going to be using it for that. I never got a chance to play God of War 1 and 2, Shadow of the Colossus, and Okami. But for now, it is strictly my Blu Ray player.

I have a stand alone HD DVD player and the PS3 next to it. The PS3 is probably the way to go right now, with price and one of the only players that have web access for upcoming bonus features.
