Top Three Home Gaming Systems of All-Time
Hey gang,
What do you think are the top three gaming systems of all time?
Don't just consider their play-ability, though this is very important (we are talking about game systems after all). Also consider thier place in history in helping to define the home gaming genre...
There were some limitations to this survey. Though it's far from ideal, considering how far systems have come over the years, I clustered several systems in together (Playstation1-3; XBox both consoles; NES both consoles). There was no way to do them seperately and still have 10 choices...If you want to identify one in particular -NES2 for example - you might want to make this an "other" choice and then explain your reasoning in a post.
It was also very difficult not to include Commodore 64 or Amiga in this survey because the games were incredible...but, obviously, its a PC and doesnt qualify here.
I also included an "other" choice if there was something I missed.
Thanks gang!
Vaulty

I went with Atari 2600, Intellivision, and Sony PS. They all seemed to be groundbreaking systems that took home gaming to another level.
It was tough not to include Sega in the convo, it was a personal fave of mine...and though Nintendo probably deserve this same type of recognition, I was never a Nintendo gamer...I voted what I knew...

I almost agreed 100% with you...but since N64 is the only system I play, I had to give it some love!

i'd say
Atari: it brought gaming home to the masses
NES: the first huge system, growing up in the 80's EVERYBODY had an NES, while Atari brought gaming home the NES cemented it into the culture
Playstation 1: redefined "next gen" the first system to effectivly (and popularly) use CD gaming and the built in DVD player opened the gaming doors to many non gamers
now obviously theres always going to be a new "better" system out there, but these 3 took the genre to a new level each time, so just simple graphical improvements aren't really going to be enough any more to be truly groundbreaking

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

no love for the dreamcast?
My top 3
1. SNES, home of so many top games including possibly the best game of all time super mario world, the original and still the best mario kart, zelda, secrets of mana, streetfighter 2 turbo.
2. XBOX 360, the current console with the best choice of games available, also carrying off where the original XBOX left off in refining the best console online service in live.
3. Dreamcast - For me the Dreamcast was ahead of its time, the visuals compare favourably with the more overhyped PS2, home of some great games, such as jet set radio, the original soul calibur, power stone 1&2, ikaruga and shenmue.
It was also to my knowledge the first home console to offer online play through fantasy star online and quake 3. Sadly it did not recieve the commercial success it deserved, due mainly to the mega-cd and staurn fiascos which procceded it and the runaway success of the ps1.

In terms of relevance & impact I picked chronologically...
Atari - brought the arcade games home
NES - the household name that will forever be known as the system that became the standard in home video gaming
Sony - broke the mold after Nintendo
The next one up wouldve been the Wii but I only have 3 choices
